Natural Grocers, a Colorado-based company, has released its first Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), report. It highlights production standards, pricing strategies, community support, employee involvement, and more. The company has been a pioneer in sustainability and regenerative farming since its inception in 1950s. However, Natural Grocers released its first ESG report in 2021. This document outlines the retailer’s standards and results. For example, Natural Grocers will now sell free-range eggs in 2021 after sourcing cage-free eggs for decades. The company noted that it is the only specialty retailer in the United States with the ability to sell 100% organic produce, 100% non GMO bulk products, 100% pasture raised dairy products, and 100% humanely reared and sustainably sourced meats and fish. Natural Grocers also highlighted other ESG-related activities and achievements in 2021. These included the launch of the Heroes in Aprons Fund, which provides financial assistance to employees who are experiencing unanticipated hardships. The grocer reported that $1 million was raised through customer fundraising and company giving over the past year.
Natural Grocers’ ESG report linked the retailer’s record financial year to rising consumer demand for natural and organic goods that meet high sustainability thresholds. Our parents founded Natural Grocers in 1955. They wanted to improve the well-being of their family, friends, and neighbors, and preserve the health of the planet. Natural Grocers is still a leader in this movement because of our five founding principles: nutrition education and the highest quality organic products, ‘always accessible’ prices, commitment towards our crew and communities, and commitment to our customers.” Heather Isely is Natural Grocers’ EVP.
The retailer’s ESG efforts will continue into early 2022. Natural Grocers, based in Lakewood, Colo., announced this week that February will be designated Crew Appreciation Month. The retailer will give employees gifts, discounts, and other gestures of appreciation. 95 on The PG 100. Progressive Grocer’s 2021 Top 100 List of North American Food and Consumables Retailers.
