CINCINNATI–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan 6, 2022–Cintas Corporation (Nasdaq: CTAS) was recently honored among Newsweek’s 2022 America’s Most Responsible Companies.
Newsweek points out that America’s Most Responsible Businesses list is “based upon a holistic view corporate responsibility” and also considers the three ESG categories in its rankings – corporate governance, environment, and social – to create a final “CSR Score” which is used to rank companies.
“We believe that ESG plays a central role in Cintas. It has influenced our sustainable business model from the beginning of our company’s existence during the Great Depression,” stated Todd Schneider, Cintas President & CEO. “Environmental and social governance concepts are deeply ingrained in our company, and we are grateful for the recognition for our recent achievements in these areas.
“Cintas has made great efforts to reduce our environmental impact, foster an inclusive, supportive environment for our employee-partners, and establish ourselves as moral and ethical company. Our corporate culture is built on doing the right thing and using positive discontent as a way to improve ourselves. While it is gratifying to be recognized for our achievements, we also recognize that we must continue to push ourselves to make stronger impact in these areas while doing so in an admirable manner,” Schneider said.
The 2022 edition marks the debut of the company on Newsweek’s third-annual rankings. This list began in 2020. Newsweek used Statista, a global leader in market and consumer data, to provide the analysis.
After a four-phase review, Cintas was selected to be on Newsweek’s Top 100 Public Companies in America.
Newsweek and Statista evaluated the America’s Most Responsible Company List based on publicly available information, which included Cintas 2020 ESG Report. The 2021 ESG Report was not published and was not included in the 2022 evaluation. Fiscal year 2021 ESG data was also not available at that time.
How the Rankings were Decided
Newsweek and Statista created the 2022 rankings through a four-phase process. The candidate pool was selected from the top 2,000 publicly traded companies by revenue, with headquarters in the United States. Banks and insurance companies were also included.
The pre-screening process continued. Companies that published a corporate responsibility report in 2019 or 2020, or something similar to a sustainability or ESG reporting, were considered provided they reported at least one key performance indicator (KPI) in relation to the environment sector as of June 30, 20,21.
Companies were also removed from consideration if they were involved with major lawsuits or scandals.
Statista then conducted a thorough review of the remaining candidates companies. This included surveying over 11,000 U.S. residents, as well as researching the company’s performance on relevant KPIs such waste, emissions and water use, leadership diversity and employees, philanthropy, disclosure and transparency, economic performance, and financial performance.
Their CSR Score was calculated based on a detailed analysis of the data collected in each of the three areas. This 70% component score is combined with the incorporation of reputational survey results which complete the remaining 30%.
To determine the final CSR score of companies, the final environment, governance and social component scores were equally weighted.
The “America’s Most Responsible Company” designation was given to the 500 companies that had the highest CSR scores.
