REUTERS/Kim Kyung-HoonDec 23 (Reuters) – Companies have borrowed record sums via sustainable bonds this year, tapping demand from investors who have become more concerned about climate risks and social inequality.Sustainable finance bond issuance totalled $859 billion this year, the highest ever, according to Refinitiv data. This compares to $534.3 billion last. This compares to $534.3 billion last year. Sustainability bonds combine green and social bonds. “This spread premium is also increasing. “This spread premium is also growing.” Andrew Poreda, Sage Advisory Services’ ESG research analyst, said that it is easy to see where the bond proceeds are going and it makes it easier to quantify the benefits from an environmental or social standpoint. These bonds could be a good option for ESG-conscious investors who are concerned about ‘greenwashing’. Data showed that Europe was the leader in sustainable bond issuance with proceeds of $475.9 Billion. The United States had $182.1 Billion and Asia-Pacific had $149.2 Billion. “On the demand side of things, the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation in Europe (SFDR in Europe) brings mandatory ESG disclosure obligations. We can expect that this regulation supports more transparent ESG issuance,” stated Laure Villepelet from Tikehau Capital’s Head of ESG.
