According to the report, ESG bonds will also be more prominent in emerging market sovereign and corporate debt markets.
Sonja Gibbs is the managing director and head for sustainable finance at IIF. She stated that “By 2025 there will be very few global investors without a significant allocation to ESG or green investments.”
“And if we look ahead to 2050, when governments and businesses around the globe will be trying to deliver on net zero commitments, then we will have effectively greened global bonds markets, transforming the environment for the better.”

Research found that ESG investing was historically centered on equity markets. Researchers said that bond investors will be able to raise more capital as there is an annual need for $4trn to “contain the threat of climate change”.
Pictet researchers and IIF warned of the dangers despite the predicted explosion in growth in ESG bond space.
They stated that ESG bonds are more complex than conventional bonds and can be expensive to analyse. They don’t fit into the current portfolio construction frameworks investors prefer.
